California is leading the US in terms of charging infrastructure deployment, recently securing $800 Million in charging infrastructure investment, but while this makes owning an EV in California highly desirable, range anxiety is a major barrier to purchase for the majority of would-be EV owners.

Comparing US states can give some indication of how charging infrastructure relates to EV uptake. In Oklahoma, where the number of charging points per person is considerably smaller than most, sales of EVs in 2017 were just 209, compared with 96,731 in California.
